Bee Facts: The Story of a Tiny Visitor and a New App

It All Started with a Bee on My Balcony
About a month ago, I had a new regular visitor. A small, fuzzy bee—working a 9–5 on my new lavender plants. Every day, it would diligently visit the flowers on my balcony, completely absorbed in its work. I started looking forward to seeing it and cheered (loudly) every time he came back.
What kind of bee was it? Where did it go after it left my flowers? How far did it travel? When does it go on vacation?
I pulled out my phone, hoping to find a simple app full of fun facts about bees. What I found instead were bee games—and more bee games. While I do not understand this genre of video games, I guess it has a large market. Nothing was simple, delightful, informative, and made for quick, fun discovery with good information about bees.
In that moment, I realized that if I wanted an app like that, I was going to have to build it myself.
Introducing: Bee Facts 🐝

I’m excited to announce the launch of my new app, Bee Facts. It’s a simple, beautifully designed app for anyone who has ever been curious about the incredible world of bees.
I created Bee Facts to be the app I couldn’t find: a place to quickly learn amazing things about our planet’s most important pollinators. It’s like apps from the early days of the App Store—focused, intentional, and rewarding in a short burst of fun and curiosity.
What you’ll find inside:
- Fascinating Facts: Discover hundreds of surprising facts about bees—their lifecycle, what they’re likely doing at different times of day, and their vital role in our ecosystem.
- Beautifully Simple: No clutter, no complicated menus. Just open the app and start learning. There are sections on the most common bees in North America (there are over 4,000 species total, so only the most common are included) and step-by-step guides for building various types of bee houses.
From a Balcony to the App Store
This project started with a single bee, but it grew into a passion for understanding these amazing creatures. I already loved bees, so creating this app wasn’t too big of a leap. I find it incredibly rewarding to design enjoyable user interfaces for things I’m passionate about.
Along the way, I learned that bees can recognize human faces, so I like to think he was also excited to see me every day. I probably should’ve put my face in the app so the bees know who made it.
The more I learned, the more I wanted to share. That little bee has since disappeared, probably while I was away on vacation. My guess is, he missed me and found another balcony to inspire someone else.
My little visitor doesn’t know it, but he inspired a bridge between nature and technology. Hopefully not his last. My hope is that Bee Facts does the same for you.
